I recently did a super exciting photo-shoot with my insanely talented friend and photographer, Kathryn Smith, and my insanely beautiful friend and model, Claire Camak. Our inspiration for the shoot was 60s mod fashion.
I feel the 60s is such an underrated decade for fashion. Most teens these days live for 90s plaids, or 80s colorways, or 70s flares. I love a good slip dress paired with kitten heels as much as the next girl, but bright tights and a mini dress is truly an iconic duo that trumps all other iconic duos. The 60s was such a powerful time in fashion for women, simply because the fashion reflected the political climate at the time. Mod women were owning their femininity with bright colors and dresses that kept getting shorter and shorter. The 60s mod look was more about the pattern and color than the shape. Paisley like prints with bright colors were considered "groovy." Any silhouette that didn't define the waist was in style-like the shift dress. Basically wearing a bright, colorful sack was considered hip! Block heels paired with colored tights were a staple for any outfit. Any jewelry with some sort of geometric shape to it was also considered groovy.
I dressed Claire head to toe in these 60s staples and here is how the photo-shoot turned out:
I choose to dress Claire in a plaid shift dress that screamed 60s to me.
I paired the look with white tights in order to contrast the black plaid dress. Adding the black socks and white shoes added more contrast to the look. Contrasting colors is key to 60s mod style.
I added a pair of circle shaped earrings that were the perfect red gingham print to tie in the red barett.
I used red and yellow as pops of color, it wouldn't be a 60s look without bold colors!
These colors photograph nicely and continue the theme of contrast throughout the look.
Plastic accessories were all the rage in the 60s. I found the perfect plastic square shaped bag and tied a patterned ascot around the handle to finish off the look.
Yes, I know Claire is stunning, and Katie is magical. I love my friends and am forever grateful for their continuous support. Katie is pursuing her career in photography at SCAD, starting in the fall, and I am so proud of her! She is going to be a very successful fashion photographer in a few years, so follow her Instagram @kathryn.sierra to keep up with her work.
